The
East Liverpool
We have held 15 formal banquet induction ceremonies and on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2006, we hosted the 15th to honor the induction of both the Class of 2005 & 2006.
Additionally, at the 1985 banquet, we paid tribute to the school’s first undefeated football team from 1945 and at the 1995 banquet we honored the only undefeated-untied football team in ELHS history, the 1955 “Potter” Eleven. Tonight we honor the only State Championship Team ever produced at ELHS… the 1950 Cross-Country Team.
We chanced off a personalized autographed football and photograph of Archie Griffin, the only two-time Heisman Trophy winner from Ohio State .
We have constructed or had constructed the display cases mounted in the field house lobby, where plaques honoring inductee are prominently displayed.
As part of the induction ceremonies, each enshrinee is presented with a replica of his/her plaque, as displayed in the field house, a lapel pin indicating his membership as a Hall of Fame Enshrinee and a wallet card attesting to the same.
Originally, and through 1989, the Master of Ceremonies presented over the entire induction ceremonies. However, the committee felt that a presenter selected by each individual inductee would add a more personal and intimate perspective to the proceedings.
In many instances it is a way for the inductee to publicly express appreciation and thanks for the previously unheralded inspiration and motivation. It has often been felt, that to some inductees, this public opportunity to express such gratitude was the fulfillment of a long standing desire and might well have been nearly as important as the induction itself.
We constantly encourage the public to submit to the committee, the names of those they deem worthy of consideration for induction. Even though each committee member is expected to have a “sincere interest in” and a “reasonable historic knowledge of – ELHS athletic programs,” it is essential that we be provided with such additional information as can aid in justifying an individual’s nomination.
The selection process we have developed is relatively simple.
To become a nominee, one must first be suggested to the committee and with the endorsement of any three members; they become a nominee, remaining permanently eligible for candidacy.
There are presently more than 150 nominees on the list eligible to be candidates
Taken from the list of nominees, endorsed by at least three committee members, who have reviewed his/her athletic accomplishments, a candidate is then placed on the “long list” of prospective inductees.
The “long list” is then voted on by secret ballot, and is pared to the Top 10 MODERN ERA (1954 – Present), and the Top 6 SENIOR ERA (1953 – Previous). Beginning in the year 2003, the SENIOR ERA will advance one year each year and every year thereafter, thus maintaining a 50 year period to embrace the MODERN ERA.
Following further research and committee advocacy, this list is then voted on, again by secret ballot, and the Top 5 MODERN and Top 3 SENIOR ERA candidates are selected.
In the final selection process, individual secret ballots are cast for each candidate. Induction requires a 75% majority of all voting members or 19 votes if all 25 committee members are present.
Over the years, the committee has worked to refine the selection process. We believe that the present method is the fairest and most expeditious thus far. We no longer endure the heated marathon voting sessions of years past.
As required by both Board of Education policy and the Hall of Fame constitution, we submit an annual financial report and undergo an independent audit every three years.
It is our hope that the operation and function of this committee has not gone unnoticed, and that by providing you with and overview of past accomplishments you will have a better understanding and appreciation of all that we do and consider in this very important role.
It is our sincere belief that we are fulfilling the mandate handed down to us 25 years ago and that we shall continue to pay appropriate tribute to those who have likewise honored ELHS.
