STEUBENVILLE - The race to Canton has begun.
The East Liverpool, Beaver Local and Edison boys and girls swim teams competed at the Ohio Division II Sectional Swim Meet Saturday at the Steubenville High School Natatorium.
Only the race winner is guaranteed a spot in the district meet in Columbus next weekend. The other spots will be at-large bids based on time of finish and will be released today.
Dover won the boys' meet with 314 points, River View placed second with 251 points and New Philadelphia finished third with 215 points.
Locally, the Beavers ended up ninth with 135 points, the Potters were 13th with 55 points and the Wildcats scored 15 points to finish in 18th place.
East Liverpool boys' coach Tim Diddle said he was happy with his team's performance in the pool.
"They swam well," he said. "Almost everybody took time off. We set a new school record in the medley relay with Tommy Mohney, Zech Harris, Stephan Yoho and Matt Campbell. We took two seconds off of our time. Hopefully, that will get us to districts with our time. Now, it is just a waiting game until (Sunday) when they come out, and we see who all gets to go."

Review Staff Reports ,The Review
RICHMOND - The East Liverpool girls swim team was able to sneak past Edison on Wednesday, 44-42.
On the boys side, the Wildcats came out on top, 62-29.
"The Edison team is a great team," East Liverpool coach Pam Dawson said. "They have a pretty big girls team, many more than our eight girls and when you don't have the swimmers to place in the events, you just can't score. The boys put up a good fight and finished on top. Matt (Campbell) swam a great 200 IM to break the previous school record by 16 seconds. It's not his usual event, but it may be now."
The Potters girls 200 Freestyle relay team (Alissa Gill, Kelsey Diddle, Emily Kotfis, Kyra Gill) took first in 2:10.75.
